What Happened in Social this Week

In partnership with

By the time you read this, I will be on a short vacation. The summer slump is real, folks, and I’m dialing down this newsletter to twice a month until Labor Day.

Today we’re keeping it light with a roundup of social media updates you need to know.

Let’s go!

Run IRL ads as easily as PPC

AdQuick unlocks the benefits of Out Of Home (OOH) advertising in a way no one else has. Approaching the problem with eyes to performance, created for marketers with the engineering excellence you’ve come to expect for the internet.

Marketers agree OOH is one of the best ways for building brand awareness, reaching new customers, and reinforcing your brand message. It’s just been difficult to scale. But with AdQuick, you can plan, deploy and measure campaigns as easily as digital ads, making them a no-brainer to add to your team’s toolbox.

👏 TikTok Enhances User Experience on Desktop

TikTok rolled out a new feature for desktop users, allowing them to sort videos by popularity.

Popularity is gauged by engagement rather than views, offering a more nuanced insight into what resonates with audiences.

👀 Instagram Stays Away from Long-form Content

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, made it clear that Instagram won't be focusing on long-form content anytime soon.

This decision keeps the platform distinct from TikTok IMO, which has experimented with longer videos.

Mosseri also emphasized the shareability of content, which seems to be the metric du jour over at the IG HQ.

🎵 Spotify Introduces Comments on Podcasts

Spotify now offers the ability for users to leave comments on podcasts.

This feature gives podcast creators control over which comments appear, with options to enable comments for specific episodes or the entire show, or to opt-out entirely.

The press is trying to position Spotify as a ‘social’ platform—a big stretch in my opinion.

📧 LinkedIn Adds Sponsored Newsletters

LinkedIn launched sponsored newsletters for company pages.

Although details are a bit vague, this move could significantly boost visibility and engagement for company-generated content.

I’m a big believer in newsletters 😉, so 10/10 no notes.

🤝 Instagram Tests New Collab Feature

IG is testing a new feature that allows professional accounts to display an “open to collaborating” status.

This could enhance connection and interaction opportunities within the platform, particularly for creators and brands looking to partner up.

😆 YouTube Experiments with “Add yours” for Shorts

YouTube is testing an "Add Yours" feature for Shorts, exactly like Instagram’s popular interactive sticker.

This could be a neat way for brands to engage more deeply with their audience and amplify the reach of their short-form content.

📱 Facebook Tests ‘Clear Mode’ for Reels

In a nod to TikTok’s user-friendly interface, Facebook is experimenting with a ‘Clear Mode’ for Reels, aiming to enhance the viewing experience by minimizing distractions.

We like that! They should roll it to IG as well.

📈 Insights on Threads Usage

A new survey from Wakefield Research reveals that 63% of posts on Threads are text-only, highlighting the unique usage patterns of this platform compared to more visually-focused social media sites.

I still have my reservations about Threads, but that’s a whole different newsletter issue (coming from someone who helped launch the product back in the day and is user # 67).

🆓 X (Formerly Twitter) Offers Free Premium Trials

X, (FKA Twitter, as everyone likes to remind everyone) is considering free trials for its Premium subscriptions.

Does this reek of desperation? Maybe 😏

This strategy could attract more users to experience the benefits of its paid features without immediate commitment.
